Family Therapy

Attending family therapy service is a positive opportunity to enhance, repair, or strengthen family relationships. A family psychologist will establish a safe and supportive environment where you can share experiences and challenges. Family therapy can help deal with an issue that belongs to one member of your family or one that everyone is experiencing. It is a chance for a group conversation in a supportive environment that helps you see new ways through together.

The Basics of Family Therapy Explained

Family therapy occurs when two or more family members come together in a therapy setting with the desire to address challenges within the family.

However many family members attend, our goal is to find out what each family member hopes to get out of the process and assuming there is common ground regarding these goals, then there is every possibility for positive changes to happen. Each member in the session will be given equal opportunity to express themselves. Every family member can contribute significantly to improving family dynamics. By listening carefully to each person speak and each person themselves being carefully listened to, an environment of solution building can be created, instead of one filled with blame or exclusion

FAMILY THERAPY THINGS TO THINK ABOUT

  • My assumption is that everyone coming into family therapy is willing to contribute to finding solutions they and the other family members can attempt to put into practice.
  • I consider that a family unit attending therapy have something they collectively want, or a vision for their future as a family they would all like to see become a reality. Each family member might not know exactly how to arrive there, and that’s okay. The how is not as important as the want to, especially at the beginning of family therapy.
  • Contributing to family therapy means applying oneself to the process not just during the therapy sessions, but between sessions also. Perfection is not required or expected when trying to apply yourself between sessions. The important part is just trying your best and looking out for improvements you happen to notice. Simple as that!
